Do You Owe The IRS | Resolve It Yourself Or Hire An IRS Tax Professional?

Updated: May 19

Coast to Coast IRS Help

May 17th is upon us. Time to file your tax return this year. The tax industry likes to market tax season as a time to “claim your refund” and get a little extra cash in your pocket, but for millions of taxpayers, tax season means additional tax debt. About 2 in 10 taxpayers, reported getting an “unusually large tax bill” in the past three years. This year, in particular, taxpayers may be in for a rude awakening as the IRS noted that the pandemic’s financial impacts could affect your taxes. An IRS tax debt affects people of every socioeconomic class, gender and ethnicity. Tax debt doesn't discriminate. The IRS will enforce collection no matter who your are. There are only a few ways to resolve a tax debt.

Resolving a tax liability on your own is often recommended in certain circumstances, especially if you owe less than $10,000. $10,000 is the lowest amount of tax debt that the IRS will settle. You’ll find that most tax relief companies have a minimum debt amount of $10,000 that must be met before the company considers taking on a case. The cost-benefit to the debtor makes hiring a tax professional should be a major factor in your decision.

Have You Attempted to Get the IRS on the Phone?

Our tax pros, being licensed to represent taxpayers throughout the USA, have a direct line to the IRS. This is called the "Practitioner Priority Service. You may ask "how can I resolve my IRS problem if I can't get anyone at the IRS to answer the phone?"

Do you really expect the IRS to make things easy for a novice?

Per the IRS Website: "Tax practitioners have long served an important role in our nation's tax collection system as a conduit between taxpayers and the IRS. The Practitioner Priority Service® (PPS) is your first point of contact for account-related issues. Our Practitioner Priority Service® is a professional support line that is staffed by IRS customer service representatives specially trained to handle practitioners' accounts inquiries."

PPS service hours are weekdays:

a. 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time (Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific time)

b. 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time for Puerto Rico

What are the resources available to you?

There’s no doubt that 2020 has been a "really screwed up year." 2020 was a year of financial hardship for many Americans, and the economic fallout caused by the Covid-19 pandemic continues. Unfortunately, the government's financial relief and incentive programs have been challenging to understand. Many taxpayers do not know how best to utilize these programs to secure the highest level of relief.

It is the opinion of Flat Fee Tax Relief that the IRS is being overwhelmed with tax debt to collect. We feel that this may be an opportune time to submit an Offer in Compromise as the IRS will want to quickly close cases. The number one reason that the IRS rejects settlement offers is due to "paper-work" problems. Every OIC must be done accurately to avoid rejection. Flat Fee Tax Relief has a 96% OIC success rate while the national average is 42%. Should you seek relief from an IRS tax debt, there are solutions available. In general, taxpayers struggling to pay off a tax liability may qualify for one or more of the following IRS programs:

Offer in Compromise. (This is a settlement of a tax debt)

Currently not Collectible status. (The IRS will cease collection)

Installment Agreements (Extended payment plan)

All three of the above listed tax relief programs are similar but have very different outcomes. All three of the above tax relief options are determined by your current financial health. The IRS uses a financial formula along with other criteria to determine what you are eligible and qualified for. Unfortunately, there is no “one size fits all” financial hardship determiner. Instead, the IRS determines whether you qualify by utilizing your zip code and measuring your monthly allowable expenses against your assets, income and extraneous circumstances. If you really should be in Non-Collectible status and you "volunteer" to enter into a payment plan, the IRS isn't going to talk you out of it. Same goes with an Offer in Compromise. The IRS will not tell you that you can settle your tax debt should you agree to an Installment Agreement. The IRS isn't your "buddy." The IRS will never be your friend.

Understand what a tax relief professional can and cannot achieve.

Professional tax relief is not a magical solution to your tax issue. A legitimate tax relief company will never guarantee a specific result or quote an amount by which they will reduce your tax liability. What tax relief professionals can provide is the peace of mind that your tax liability is being resolved as effectively and efficiently as possible. Tax relief companies often employ a team of tax attorneys, CPAs and enrolled agents who specialize in resolving tax liabilities every day.

Resolving a tax liability on your own could mean hours on the phone and months, and yes, even years of communication with the IRS and thousands of dollars in additional penalties and interest fees. Tax relief companies take that burden off you, while qualified tax professionals are at the forefront of your fight. They help resolve your tax issue as quickly as possible. There are literally thousands of tax relief companies throughout the country. When considering hiring a tax debt expert whose specialty is negotiating tax debt with the IRS to seek resolutions that work for both parties do not over pay. Don't pay a $500.00 fee for "an Investigation." DON'T DO IT. TOTALLY UNNECESSRY. At Flat Fee Tax Relief, our tax pros have developed relationships over the years with various IRS agents and revenue officers that help us to quickly come to a resolution for clients.

Flat Fee Tax Relief has been providing valuable IRS help at a very affordable fee for more than a decade. We are licensed in all 50 states and are strategically located in Clearwater, Florida, and San Diego, California. Having coast-to coast locations is a huge advantage when having a tax levy stopped and released in one day is a primary concern.
